Have questions about bagMUSTER?
This FAQ section covers everything you need to know.
What type of bags does bagMUSTER collect?
bagMUSTER collects and recycles single-use polypropylene (PP) agricultural plastic bags used for products like fertiliser, seed, grain (excluding silo bags), stock feed, and pet food. These bags, typically ranging from 25kg to over 1,200kg bulk bags, are purchased from participating retailers, helping to reduce agricultural waste and promote responsible disposal practices.

Who can participate in the bagMUSTER program?
The program is open to farmers, agricultural businesses, and anyone who has purchased single use PP agricultural bags from participating retailers. Retailers and manufacturers can participate by partnering with bagMUSTER and encouraging their customers to return eligible bags to collection sites. Please note, bags are only accepted at collection sites if purchased from participating retailers.

When will bagMUSTER collection sites start accepting bags?
bagMUSTER collection sites will officially begin accepting eligible bags starting mid-late January 2025. Please ensure your bags meet the program's eligibility requirements before dropping them off. For more details on collection site locations and open times, please visit our collection site webpage.

Which locations are participating in bagMUSTER collections?

Collection sites are located across rural Victoria for phase 1 of the program. The following sites, which are already established drumMUSTER collection points (the same operating hours will apply), have signed up to participate, allowing for efficient disposal of both single use PP agricultural bags and triple rinsed, lid free chemical drums.

Is there a cost to participate in bagMUSTER?
There is no cost for end users to dispose of their eligible bags at collection sites. However, there may be landfill fees associated with non-participating bags, so it is recommended to consult with the collection site for more information.
Will bagMUSTER expand to include other types of agricultural plastics?
While bagMUSTER currently focuses on woven polypropylene bags, the program may expand in the future to include other types of agricultural plastics. Agsafe is always exploring opportunities to grow its sustainability initiatives based on industry needs and feedback.
What steps is Agsafe taking to ensure 100% of collected bags are recycled?
Agsafe partners with certified recycling facilities that are capable of processing the materials efficiently. The program aims to recycle 100% of the bags collected, ensuring they are transformed into new products rather than being sent to landfills. This is why we are conducting a phased launch, to ensure that all bags collected are capable of being recycled, as not all locations have this facility available yet. We will be transparent about what happens to the bags, helping manufacturers and retailers meet their reporting requirements and ensuring end users know how their efforts contribute to sustainable practices.
Is there a limit to how many bags one can bring to a collection site?
There is no set limit, but participants are encouraged to follow the preparation guidelines to ensure the bags are in the best condition for recycling. Due to the registration process, collection sites will be notified of larger quantities in advance and can make accommodations to ensure a smooth drop-off experience.
How does bagMUSTER compare to other agricultural plastic recycling programs?
bagMUSTER is focused on recycling single use woven polypropylene bags used in agriculture. While other recycling initiatives may target different types of plastics or products, bagMUSTER is tailored to the unique needs of the agricultural sector and provides a comprehensive solution for bag recycling. Our goal is to recycle the bags in Australia, not dispose of them in landfills or export them. We are committed to being transparent about the recycling process because we believe participants deserve to know what happens to the bags they contribute. Participants can trust bagMUSTER to provide a reliable, transparent solution, setting it apart from other programs.
What are the long-term goals of bagMUSTER?
The long-term goal of bagMUSTER is to become a nationwide solution for the responsible disposal and recycling of all types of agricultural plastic bags, ensuring that none end up in landfill. Agsafe aims to expand the program’s reach, increase participation, and explore new opportunities for recycling other agricultural plastics in the future.

What happens to the bags after they are dropped off?
Once bags are dropped off at a bagMUSTER collection site, ownership of the plastic transfers to the collection site. The collection site is responsible for securely storing the bags until they are picked up for recycling. When the recycler collects the bags, ownership of the plastic then transfers to them. The recyclers process the bags into new materials, contributing to a sustainable, circular economy by turning agricultural waste into reusable products.
When will bagMUSTER expand to new regions?
bagMUSTER is currently focused on establishing a successful collection network in the initial operating regions. Phase 2, which will involve expanding to additional areas across Victoria and other states, is planned as we build capacity and infrastructure. We aim to roll out the next phase as soon as possible, depending on the availability of recycling facilities and collection resources in each new area.
I have a stockpile of bags purchased before bagMUSTER launched. Can I recycle them through the program?
bagMUSTER only accepts eligible bags purchased from participating retailers after 1 October 2024. Bags purchased prior to this date are not covered by the program’s funding model and therefore do not qualify for collection. Please contact Agsafe to discuss alternative disposal options.
How does bagMUSTER support farm QA (Quality Assurance) programs?
bagMUSTER aligns with farm QA programs by providing a responsible and traceable way to dispose of single-use polypropylene bags. When you register and drop off bags through bagMUSTER, you’ll receive a certificate of collection, which can be used as documentation for QA audits and reporting. This certificate verifies that your farm is actively participating in an industry-led recycling initiative, supporting sustainable waste management practices. Incorporating bagMUSTER into your operations can help demonstrate compliance with environmental stewardship requirements, enhancing your farm’s commitment to sustainability in the eyes of auditors, customers, and the community.
